Day one of the 2012 Governors Ball offered something for everyone in terms of musical diversity. Click below for some SHOTS of the artists in action:

What: 2012 Governors Ball (Day 1)

Where: NYC

Venue: Randall’s Island

When: June 23, 2012

Who: Big Gigantic, Atmosphere, Major Lazer, Santigold, James Murphy & Pat Mahoney (DFA/LCD Soundsystem)

Notes: I want to start off by saying that I love Governors Island as a venue (CLICK HERE FOR MY RECAP FROM LAST YEAR), but Randall’s Island served as a great replacement this time around. Easy, efficient and cheap ($5.50 round trip) bus service to and from the island proved to be clutch.

Also, bravo to the staff. This has been my second year covering the festival for various outlets and both years have been great – from easy, reliable communication to a quick check-in process.

I also love the idea of no overlapping sets – meaning there’s no way you won’t catch your favorite artist. The two stage set-up provides concert-goers with a quick walk from stage to stage with the carefree thought that they won’t be missing artist A if they stop to watch artist B.

Perfect weather and eclectic music summed up the 2012 Governors Ball. I was impressed by everyone I saw on Day 1, including underground hip hop duo Atmosphere (Slug and Ant) out of Minnesota. I haven’t seen Atmosphere live since about 2003. Diplo and his Major Lazer set definitely had the most energetic set of the day – from stage diving to rolling around the audience in a giant plastic hamster ball.
