The first ever Catalpa Music Festival launched yesterday on NYC’s Randall’s Island to less-than-optimal weather, but quality music. Click below for some SHOTS of the people who attended the event:

What: Catalpa Music Festival

Where: NYC

Venue: Randall’s Island

When: July 28, 2012

Who: N/A

Notes: I must admit that the rainy weather did hold me back from attending the festival until about 5pm (it started around 1), but it was fortunate because as I arrived, the sun peaked through for the first time all day.

Aside from the weather, I would say the Catalpa Music Festival has the potential to become an NYC staple. I’ll talk more about the actual music in posts following this ‘People’ gallery, but, in general, Catalpa has the right ideas in place.

The obvious comparison would be to the hugely successful Governor’s Ball. I felt as though the GovBall focused on the music a bit more, while Catalpa focused on the entire festival experience – and that seems to be the aim judging by festival creator/promoter Dave Foran’s intv with Billboard. There’s good and bad that comes with that, but I’d say Catalpa successfully integrated outside elements (outside of straight performances) in to the festival fairly seamlessly.

More analysis to come as I head back out right now for Day 2, but here are a few SHOTS from yesterday’s crowd. Performance pictures from Day 1 are coming shortly. Enjoy:
