Jay Electronica emerged from the shadows and Ms. Monae put on one of the best sets of the weekend. My SHOTS below:

What: Made in America Festival (Jay Electronica and Janelle Monae’s sets)

Where: Philadelphia, PA

Venue: Benjamin Franklin Parkway

When: September 1, 2012

Who: Jay Electronica, Jay-Z, Janelle Monae

Notes: Jay Electronica was one of the last minute additions to the Made in America Festival – and I was surely glad when I spotted him on the final schedule the morning of the 1st.

Electronica is a critically acclaimed artist for the music he has put other there, but at the same time he is both loved and hated by his fans for his lack of music and long-delayed album. Nevertheless, he put on a powerful half an hour set that included his big records, including “Exhibit C” and “Eternal Sunshine.” A rare sighting indeed…

Janelle Monae’s set was right around Electronica’s set and I was interested in checking her live show out. So was this guy up there, apparently.

With Jay-Z looking on, Janelle Monae put on one hell of a show as she integrated a live band in to her set. Talk about a beautiful voice combined with elegant strings, brass, and more – this was one of the surprising highlights of the festival for me. I 100% recommend checking out Ms. Monae live is she stops by your city.
